SPECIALIZED TREATMENT FOR EATING DISORDERS

I am psychotherapist in private practice in Pittsburgh, PA who has been in the field of of eating disorders for over 37 years. In 1984, after a family member's recovery from an eating disorder, I created the Pennsylvania Educational Network for Eating Disorders (PENED), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational, supportive and referral services to the general and professional public on the causes, treatment and prevention of eating disorders and related issues.

In 1987, I became a Founder of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) where I served on the Board of Directors for 16 years holding many board offices as well as the position of Acting Executive Director. As a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) and the Eating Disorder Coalition for Policy, Research and Action (EDC), I am dedicated to staying abreast of the most recent research, best practice and advocacy for those suffering with eating disorders, their families and friends. For many years, I lobbied in Congress in Washington, D.C. with the EDC in order to obtain equitable and adequate treatment for those with eating disorders and the support for continued research and education for the public. Our victory in urging the passing of Mental Health Parity is the type of legislation we supported.

In 1992, I received the Jefferson Award for Community Service from Washington, DC; in 2004 the Lifetime Achievement Award from the EDC; and in 2008 the Westin Family Foundation Award for advocacy from the National Eating Disorders Association. I am a published writer, nationally recognized educational trainer for both professionals and the general public, and a media spokesperson on the topics of eating disorders and other mental health issues.

In my private practice, I provide compassionate, non-judgmental and comprehensive treatment for people suffering with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. I also treat associated disorders of depression, anxiety and trauma. I work as part of a team with physicians, dietitians, psychiatrists and other professionals that may be necessary for adequate treatment of these complicated and potentially life threatening illnesses. I use the treatment modalities of individual, group and family therapy, as well as psychoeducational support groups which are also open to family and friends. I have been trained in Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Dialectical Behavioral therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, EMDR, Ego State therapy, DMNS and a variety of other methods geared to the treatment of eating disorders, depression, anxiety and trauma.

In 2019, I also received Certification in Life Coaching which allows me to aid people in their aspirations and careers thus helping them to achieve a more productive and satisfying life. Virtual appointments are available.

We created a new non-profit organization, FOOTSTEPS FOR RECOVERY to replace PENED in 2014. New clinical services will be part of our mission..

"EACH CLIENT IS VIEWED AS AN INDIVIDUAL WITH HER OR HIS OWN HISTORY AND NEEDS IN THIS SPECIALIZED TREATMENT WHICH IS GEARED TOWARDS OBTAINING A MORE FUNCTIONAL AND IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE."
